Outdoor Swimming Pools in Barcelona

What are the best outdoor swimming pools in Barcelona?

Piscina Municipal de Montjuic

The Piscina Municipal de Montjuïc is a renowned outdoor swimming facility in Barcelona, celebrated for its Olympic legacy and breathtaking panoramic views of the city. Situated on Montjuïc Hill, this venue offers a unique blend of sports history and scenic beauty. The complex features two main pools: a 25-meter recreational pool and a diving pool, though the diving platforms are not open to the public. Both pools use saltwater, which is gentler on the skin and eyes compared to traditional chlorinated pools. Visitors can enjoy a small poolside kiosk offering refreshments, and sunbeds are available for rent, providing a comfortable spot to relax while taking in the spectacular views.

Originally opened in 1929, the facility was significantly renovated for the 1992 Summer Olympics, where it hosted diving events and water polo preliminaries. Its elevated position on Montjuïc Hill makes it one of the most picturesque swimming venues in the world.

Located at Avinguda de Miramar, 31, 08038 Barcelona, the pool is easily accessible by metro (Espanya station, L1 and L3), funicular (Montjuïc Funicular from Paral·lel station), and bus (lines 55 and 150).

The pool’s setting offers unparalleled views of Barcelona, making it a must-visit spot for both swimming enthusiasts and those simply looking to unwind. Whether you’re aiming for a refreshing swim or wish to relax with a view, the Piscina Municipal de Montjuïc promises an unforgettable summer experience.

CEM Parc de la Ciutadella

CEM Parc de la Ciutadella is a public outdoor swimming pool located on the edge of the beautiful Ciutadella Park in central Barcelona, offering an inviting and accessible summer escape for all age groups. This facility features a rooftop deck with sun loungers, giving visitors a touch of luxury at an affordable price. The pool provides a relaxed atmosphere ideal for families, tourists, and locals alike, thanks to its central location and welcoming environment. CEM Parc de la Ciutadella is an excellent choice for those looking to enjoy a refreshing swim and soak up the sun in one of Barcelona’s most iconic green spaces.

Llac de la Creueta de la Coll

Llac de la Creueta del Coll, located within Barcelona’s Parc de la Creueta del Coll in the Gràcia district, offers a serene and affordable outdoor swimming experience in a former quarry setting. The lake, transformed into a public bathing area during the summer months, is an ideal place for families and children. Surrounded by natural landscapes and highlighted by Eduardo Chillida’s suspended sculpture “Elogi de l’Aigua,” the park combines art, nature, and recreation. Amenities include parasols, a lawn area, hammocks for hire, and canoe rentals. Water shoes are recommended due to the uneven pool surface. The park is accessible via Metro L5 (El Coll/La Teixonera) and bus lines 22, 129, H2, and V19.

Forum Bathing Area

The Fòrum Bathing Area in Barcelona is a unique, sand-free coastal spot offering a tranquil alternative to the city’s bustling beaches. Spanning 375m in length and 30m in width, this enclosed seawater pool provides direct access to the Mediterranean via steps from a paved surface. It’s particularly suitable for individuals with disabilities, featuring amenities like a hydraulic chair lift, adapted showers, and an assisted bathing service. The area is equipped with lifeguards, public toilets, and showers, ensuring a safe and comfortable experience for all visitors.

Splash fountains in Barcelona

Barcelona has launched four new splash fountains this summer as part of its Climate Plan to help residents cool off during heatwaves. These are not swimming pools, but fun water play areas with spray features that operate using a timed button system for responsible water use. All fountains are open daily and will remain active until September.

The new fountains are located at Casa de l’Aigua (Trinitat Vella), Jardins de Sant Joan de Déu (Les Corts), Plaça de les Glòries (which also includes the unofficial splash zone at the “Mirall d’Aigua” fountain), and Plaça del Maresme (Sant Martí). These additions bring the total to eight splash areas in the city, joining the existing ones in Canyelles, Parc de les Rieres d’Horta, Bon Pastor, and Canòdrom Meridiana.
