Why the racket sport boom?

Accessibility

Racquet sports are relatively easy to pick up and can be adapted to different fitness levels and ages, making them accessible to beginners and experienced players alike.

Community and social connection

Many racquet sports are played in pairs or groups, fostering social connection. They offer a fun way to bond with friends, family, or teammates while staying active.

Health and wellness

As people seek enjoyable ways to stay fit, racquet sports provide cardiovascular exercise, muscular conditioning, and mental agility. Studies also suggest that racquet sports are synonymous with longevity.

Outdoor and indoor play options

With both outdoor and indoor facilities, racquet sports can be played year-round.

Padel - a Spanish favourite

Padel is immensely popular across Spain, but Barcelona has quickly become a hotspot for the sport. Originally developed in Mexico in the 1960s, padel has similarities to tennis but is played on a smaller, enclosed court with walls that are integral to play, making it a fast-paced, strategic game. The social nature of padel, usually played in doubles, adds to its appeal, as it combines fitness with fun, making it accessible for everyone, from beginners to advanced players.

Local clubs are flourishing with padel activities. The city’s Real Club de Tenis Barcelona and Club Natació Atlètic-Barceloneta, among others, have seen a surge in membership from those eager to try their hand at this energetic sport. With padel’s growing recognition worldwide, the sport’s governing bodies have been organising tournaments in Barcelona, including ATP-sanctioned events, which not only boost the city’s sports tourism but also create opportunities for local players to showcase their skills on an international stage. The 2024 Premier Padel final is set to take place in Barcelona from 18th-22nd December!

Pickleball - a rising star

While relatively new to Spain, pickleball has taken Barcelona by storm. Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, played on a court about a third of the size of a tennis court, with a solid paddle and a perforated plastic ball. The sport’s low-impact nature makes it ideal for players of all ages, and it’s known for being easy to pick up.

Barcelona has been quick to embrace pickleball. Public parks and sports centers, such as the Parc de la Ciutadella and Parc del Poblenou, now offer pickleball facilities, and clubs are beginning to emerge. Recently, Barcelona hosted one of its first open pickleball tournaments, marking a milestone in growing the sport’s presence locally.

Tennis & badminton - the classics

Tennis has long been part of Barcelona’s sports background, with a rich history that includes hosting ATP tournaments and world-class training facilities. The city’s prestigious clubs, such as Real Club de Tenis Barcelona, offer high-quality courts and coaching. Meanwhile, badminton is also gaining traction, thanks to its fast pace and accessibility, with facilities across Barcelona catering to both recreational players and competitive leagues.

Barcelona´s future as a racquet sports hub

With increased demand, local councils and sports organisations are supporting the expansion of facilities, tournaments, and youth programmes. For businesses and professionals, the growth of racquet sports opens up opportunities for investment in sports facilities, equipment retail, and event sponsorship.

The popularity of racquet sports, particularly padel and pickleball, shows no signs of slowing down, and Barcelona is positioned to become an international leader in racquet sports culture.
