My Barcelona Story

Maud Anna van Gorkom

Check out the stories of Maud, Dutch, she is studying a Masters degree in International Business at EAE Business School and she is enjoying life. She is sharing advice, Q&A’s and personal experiences regarding student life in Barcelona.

Barcelona, there is no better city to work, or to study in, right? Those were my thoughts as well when I first decided to go to Barcelona. As a matter of fact, in 2017 I did an internship for a Dutch company, lived in this amazing city for 5 months and never wanted to leave. Now, I am living in this beautiful city again after 2 years and I am loving it!

Let me first introduce myself to you guys. My name is Maud van Gorkom, I am 23 years old and I grew up in a small village next to Amsterdam. I finished my bachelor’s degree in commercial economics at the University of Applied Sciences Leiden in September 2019. I am an enthusiastic, sporty and thriving young woman who’s always searching for new opportunities, things that make me more powerful in business and most importantly; things that make me happy.

The reasons why I wanted to leave my hometown in the Netherlands was because Barcelona is such a big, wonderful and beautiful city. But it is also a fine opportunity for self-development, learning a completely new language and exploring a city you have probably heard of but never been to. As well as meeting people from different cultures, experiencing moments you have never experienced before and living next to the beautiful sea with endless summer sunsets. Not forgetting of course, I have a big passion for coffee and discovering different coffee spots all over the world. I will definitely share my list of the best spots with all of you!

I have always been very optimistic by looking for something extra in life. I used to play tennis at a high level and combined this with my studies. This has given me the drive and discipline to always fight for the things I believe in and definitely made the decision of going on an adventure to the unknown that little bit easier. Although I loved to compete on a national and international level, I made the decision to focus more on my career.

After I graduated in 2019, I worked for 1,5 years at the Sales and Business Management department of InsingerGilissen Bankiers N.V. At that time, I lived with two roommates in Amsterdam next to the Amstel. I really wanted to do a Masters degree in Amsterdam and expand my business knowledge. Although I would have loved to stay in Amsterdam, I opted for gaining international experience by searching for universities and business schools abroad. This way, I found EAE Business School. I will explain the whole journey in more detail and share some tips and tricks in another blog, but I can guarantee you, this was one of the best decisions I have ever made!

In the upcoming blogs – which I cannot wait to share with you – I am going to tell you everything you need to know about a student’s life and my outlook on Barcelona. From searching for the best University in Barcelona and making sure to choose the right master’s degree, to the daily life in this major city; learning Spanish; doing sports; making friends; Q&A’s and much more!!!

Hopefully you will enjoy my shared experiences and MY BARCELONA STORY here in Barcelona.

Hasta luego!

X – Maud in Barcelona.
