The last thing anyone living abroad needs is to figure out how to receive their post from home, right? Well, that’s the exact problem that inspired our founders in 2013 to create an online tool to turn huge PDFs into tiny, email-friendly ones. And it turned out that they weren’t the only ones with this problem; millions of people started using their tool to compress PDFs and that was the explosive start of Smallpdf as we know it today.
Today, we’re a team of over 130 people and 34 nationalities, with offices in Zurich, Belgrade, and Barcelona. We’re proud to have made PDFs—and life—just a little bit easier for over a billion customers in 24 languages with over 20 PDF tools across our web, mobile, and desktop applications.
At Smallpdf, we work in pods, autonomous and cross-functional teams within the company—like the Avengers, but for SaaS! Each pod functions like a startup within a startup with its own goals that contribute to the wider company mission.
Your mission - should you choose to accept it:
As a Data Scientist within Growth, you will leverage data to help Smallpdf solve impactful business, marketing, and growth problems such as lifetime value forecasting, churn prediction, attribution modelling, causal inference, and more.

Investigate how users are using Smallpdf's services and discover patterns where we can improve our offering.
Present your investigations and key insights to stakeholders within the team and across the company.
Design and analyse more complex A/B tests.
Prototype and evaluate machine learning models for user and content understanding.
Collaborate with engineers to productionalise machine learning models and other insights.
Requirements
Your profile:
3+ years experience in data science or machine learning-focused roles, preferably working with Growth, Marketing, or Product teams.
An advanced degree (M.S., PhD.), preferably in Statistics, Computer Science, Physical Sciences, Economics, or a related technical field.
A strong track record of performing data analysis, predictive modeling and machine learning in Python (using libraries such as NumPy, Pandas, SciKit-learn, PyTorch, etc.) and a good knowledge of using SQL for answering basic business questions.
Experience using statistics and machine learning to solve complex business problems.
The ability to clearly communicate complex results to a technical and non-technical audience.
Familiarity with Linux/OS X command line, version control software (git), and general software development.
Taking ownership and the willingness to coach other team members.
Fluent in English, German is not necessary.
Nice to have:
Working knowledge analysing and understanding user behavior from user log data and having previously worked with UX researchers.
Experience writing data pipelines using a distributed compute engine such as Spark.
A good understanding of NLP models and frameworks such as HuggingFace or SpaCy.
Previous experience with the analytics and ML capabilities of cloud vendors (AWS, Google cloud, Azure).
