Life of an Intern in Barcelona
For students currently interning abroad, or hoping to embark on this journey soon, it’s normal to be both very nervous and very excited; and you’ll no doubt have tonnes of questions!
Studying and working abroad in itself is seriously impressive, but doing so in a global pandemic? Well that’s just unheard of. The Covid-19 pandemic has taken us all on an emotional rollercoaster since March last year and has done a very good job of planting seeds of doubt into the minds of future interns who are planning on coming to Barcelona.
If the countdown has officially begun for your next adventure as an intern in Barcelona, we say, don’t let Coronavirus steal such an amazing opportunity from you, and jump in with both feet first! Hi everyone, my name is Justine van Gestel, I am 22 years old and I study Communication at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen.
On 1st February 2021 my adventure in Barcelona, Spain started, luckily! For the next 5 months I would be doing an internship at DepotLab (a co-working space) and Planet Venus (an international network for female entrepreneurs) in sunny Barcelona. I say luckily, because throughout the Coronavirus pandemic it was more difficult to arrange an internship abroad. For example, 2 weeks before departure it was still not certain whether I would be able to go or not. The uncertainty and extra things that I had to arrange beforehand (for example a PCR test) were all 100% worth it!
I have been in Barcelona for 3 months so far and would love to share my story with you.
My internship in Barcelona
During the week my typical day as an intern starts at 8.30AM or 11AM. I cycle to the co-working space within 20 minutes, like a real Dutchie, travelling through the centre of Barcelona. When I arrive, I start my day with a café con leche and a croissant. Deborah (the founder of Planet Venus) recommended that if I want to live like a real Spaniard, I have to start my day with breakfast at a cafe nearby. This has now become my regular morning routine, which I enjoy very much.
For the rest of the day I am busy with all kinds of things. Because I work for DepotLab and Planet Venus, every day is different. For example:
- I am allowed to create content for various social media channels
- I have conducted benchmark research
- I write blogs
- I have hosted 2 Instagram live interviews
- We also organise fun activities for our co-workers such as a Dutch lunch or a French “Wine & Cheese night” after work. On International Women’s Day we also organised our first online networking event with Planet Venus!
I like to keep myself busy with many different things and the great thing is, you never get bored here! It makes a difference that I am well guided by the team. If I have a question or don’t understand something, everyone is willing to help me – they’re super nice! We are a team of 6 and everyone works very hard to reach their goals.
Fortunately, there is also plenty of time to take a break, the Spaniards know how to enjoy life!
I had to get used to the internship lifestyle, but because I like my internship so much, I never really minded getting up early or having a long day. Most days, time even flies!
At the end of the day I cycle home with a satisfied feeling. In contrast to studying, your work really is done at the end of work day. This gives you enough time to do fun things and discover Barcelona. Even during Covid, there has been plenty to do here. For example, all the restaurants are still open so I can enjoy the weekend on a terrace with some friends. You can also visit museums, go to the beach or admire park Güell and La Sagrada Familia.
My tips for doing an internship abroad during the Coronavirus pandemic
I definitely recommend that everyone should go abroad for an internship. Since I arrived, I haven’t regretted it at all. I can work in the office, meet new people and take Spanish lessons.
Here are a few tips to help you with an internship abroad during the Coronavirus pandemic:
- Maintain good contact with your internship supervisor before departure. Ultimately, they are the people that really know how things are going in the workplace. It was also important for me to know if I could work in the office and I could easily ask these kind of questions via email with Renzo (co-owner of DepotLab and Planet Venus).
- Keep an eye on the current restrictions in Catalonia via the City Council website and make sure you're well informed about any Corona updates. You can also check for updates via your home country's embassy. Keep in mind that you need to research what formalities need to be arranged in advance and how these procedures might have changed due to Covid.
- Make sure you have the right papers and/or book the correct tests before you travel to Spain. Be prepared for the rules regarding travel to change frequently.
- Check your insurance package as some insurance plans may be void as soon as you travel to a country with a high level Covid risk.
- Check Facebook groups such as "Dutch in Spain" for any unanswered questions you may have. Fellow expats share many tips regarding how to look for a home or an internship. This has helped me a lot, not only can you can easily ask questions, but you can also find out many things through the reactions of others.
Maybe you’ll have to arrange more things than usual and it could bring some uncertainty, but for me it was all worth it! Once you arrive in Barcelona you will soon forget about the stress of getting here. Soak up the summer sun, enjoy tapas on the terrace and take in the nice atmosphere that hangs here in the city (without tourists!).
I am delighted that, despite Corona, I am now doing an internship in Barcelona! So, are you hesitating about doing an internship abroad? I say GO FOR IT!!

Hallo allemaal, mijn naam is Justine van Gestel, 22 jaar oud en ik studeer Communicatie aan de Hanzehogeschool in Groningen.
Op 1 februari 2021 begon, gelukkig, mijn avontuur in Spanje! Vijf maanden stagelopen bij DepotLab (een co-working) en Planet Venus (een internationaal netwerk voor vrouwelijke ondernemers) in het zonnige Barcelona. En ik zeg gelukkig, want in tijden van Covid-19 was het lastiger om een stageplaats te vinden in het buitenland. Zo was het 2 weken voor vertrek nog onzeker of ik zou kunnen afreizen naar Barcelona. De onzekerheid en extra dingen die ik moest regelen voor vertrek (bijvoorbeeld een PCR-test) waren het uiteindelijk allemaal meer dan waard!
Inmiddels zit ik alweer 3 maanden in Barcelona en deel ik graag mijn verhaal met jullie.
Mijn stage in Barcelona
Doordeweeks beginnen mijn stagedagen om half 9 of om 11 uur in de ochtend. Als een echte Hollandse fiets ik door het centrum van Barcelona in 20 minuten naar de co-working. Wanneer ik aankom start ik mijn dag met een café con leche en een croissantje. Dit op aanraden van Deborah, de oprichtster van Planet Venus, want als ik als een echte Spanjaard wil leven, zou ik mijn dag moeten starten met een ontbijt bij een cafeetje in de buurt. Inmiddels is dit mijn vaste ochtendroutine geworden, waar ik erg van geniet.
De rest van de dag ben ik druk bezig met van alles en nog wat. Omdat ik werk voor DepotLab en Planet Venus is geen dag hetzelfde.
- Zo mag ik content creëren voor verschillende social media kanalen
- Heb ik een benchmark onderzoek gedaan
- Schrijf ik blogs
- Heb ik 2 Instagram live interviews verzorgd
- Ook organiseren we leuke dingen voor onze co-workers zoals een Nederlandse lunch en een Franse ‘’Wine & Cheese after work’’. Op Internationale Vrouwendag hebben we met Planet Venus, voor het eerst, een online netwerkevent georganiseerd!
Ik vind het leuk om met veel verschillende dingen bezig te zijn, je verveelt je hier nooit! De begeleiding vanuit het team is erg goed, dat maakt een wereld van verschil. Wanneer ik een vraag wil stellen of hulp kan gebruiken is iedereen bereid om mij te helpen, superfijn! Het team bestaat uit 6 mensen en we werken hard om onze doelstellingen te behalen.
Gelukkig is er ook voldoende tijd voor leuke dingen, genieten van het leven kunnen de Spanjaarden wel!
Aan het stageritme moest ik wel even wennen, maar omdat mijn stage zo bevalt vind ik het eigenlijk nooit erg om vroeg op te staan of lange dagen te maken. De tijd vliegt zelfs voorbij!
Aan het einde van de dag fiets ik met een voldaan gevoel weer naar huis. In tegenstelling tot studeren, ben je als je na een werkdag thuiskomt echt klaar met werken en kun je genieten van je vrijetijd. Hierdoor heb je genoeg tijd om leuke dingen te doen en Barcelona te ontdekken. Zelfs in tijden van Corona is er genoeg te beleven. Zo is de horeca open, dus kan ik in het weekeinde, met vriendinnen, genieten van een terrasje. Ook kan je naar musea bezoeken, naar het strand gaan of park Güell en de Sagrada Familia bewonderen.
Mijn tips voor een stage in het buitenland gedurende de coronacrisis
- Onderhoud goed contact met je stagebegeleiders voor vertrek. Zij kunnen je informeren over de actuele stand van zaken als het gaat om coronamaatregelen en aantal besmettingen. Voor mij was het ook belangrijk om te weten of ik op kantoor kon werken, dit soort vragen kon ik makkelijk stellen in het mailcontact wat ik had met Renzo, de mede eigenaar van DepotLab en Planet Venus.
- Volg zelf ook het nieuws en blijf via de website van de gemeente Barcelona, het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken en de Nederlandse ambassade op de hoogte van de actuele stand van zaken. Op de site van ANWB vind je ook praktische tips.
- Zorg ervoor dat je over de juiste papieren & testresultaten beschikt voor dat je naar Barcelona afreist. De regels zijn aan verandering onderhevig, blijf daarom het nieuws goed volgen.
- Neem contact op met je verzekeringsmaatschappij, soms zijn er gewijzigde polisvoorwaarden van toepassing wanneer je afreist naar een hoog-risicogebied.
- Veel tips met betrekking tot wonen of stage kun je vinden in verschillende Facebookgroepen voor expats in Barcelona. Hier heb ik zelf veel aan gehad, je kunt makkelijk vragen stellen, maar je komt ook veel te weten door reacties van anderen.
Misschien komt er iets meer regelwerk bij kijken en en brengt het wat onzekerheid met zich mee, maar voor mij was dat het allemaal waard. Als je eenmaal aankomt in Barcelona ben je dit al snel vergeten. Door de zon die schijnt, de tapas op het terras en de leuke sfeer die hier hangt in de stad (zonder toeristen!).
Ik ben dolblij dat ik, ondanks corona, hier nu stage loop! Dus twijfel jij om een stage te lopen in het buitenland? IK ZEG DOEN!!
