Introducing Hande Bertelsen, an american and turkish expat in Barcelona.

Why did you choose to relocate to Barcelona?

My ex had to relocate for work.

Do you have any tips for other expat parents with children in Barcelona?

I would highly recommend to sign up on groups on social media before arriving here. Because the expat community here is very helpful on subjects such as daycare, school, healthcare, legal paperwork to name the few.

How does the work culture in Spain differ from your home country?

Well, quite a lot would be the simplest way to put it. I'm from New York City. We work hard, play hard 🙂 that's one of the reasons I love being in this city because after a while I wanted to slow down a bit and I truly love the word "tranquila". I think this word summarizes the mindset here.

Do you use your native language at work?

Yes, I use English when I do private sessions and/ or group classes.

How did you find a place to live?

Basically, I walked into a random neighborhood real estate office in the neighborhood where I wanted to live. I believe it's essential to have that one on one human connection because real estate agents always have something that is "not even on the market yet " or "just became available ". These offers don't happen if your communication is through the Internet.

How did you meet your main community of friends?

I met the majority of my friends through daycare and public school. I met the parents of my kids' friends and then I was introduced to their friends and other expats.

What is your favourite coffee spot in Barcelona?

I'd say MOB is my favorite. Not only because it's in my neighborhood, but I also appreciate the little community they have created there.

thank you to Hande Bertelsen for sharing your expat story with us!
